PRACTICAL PLANNING

Understand the costs before you commit.

Questions for providers and insurers about costs, benefits and possible assistance.

Ask for a written breakdown

What is included in the price? Are assessments, medications, accommodation or follow-up charged separately? What are the refund and cancellation terms? Ask for a written estimate, but remember that services and final charges may change.

Confirm coverage with your insurer

Check the exact provider and location, the specific service, any prior authorization and your deductible or other out-of-pocket responsibility. A provider’s general insurance statement does not establish your individual benefits.

Explore official information resources

SAMHSA says its National Helpline can refer uninsured or underinsured callers to state offices and may connect people with facilities offering sliding-scale fees or participating in public insurance programs. Assistance is not guaranteed. The helpline itself is free; treatment costs vary.
